The Aussies love to make huge reds…and they make them at good prices too. Although this $8 firecracker has the alcohol and intensity of a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, it doesn’t attack the mouth with harsh oak. Rather, it blossoms with raspberry and strawberry flavors which are well balanced by smokiness.

The wine’s name, GSM, comes from its constituent grape varieties: 56% Grenache, 33% Shiraz, and 11% Mouverdre. This blend produces—in one word—balance. The red fruits are prominent but mellow, the tannins are just right, and the acidity is under control. No entrée pairings come to mind for this wine, but it would be difficult to go wrong with a rich chocolate dessert. However, with such evenness and a strong body this wine is just fine on its own.
