Trinchero Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

trincheroSickly sweet with notes of something volatile like paint thinner or solvent. This offensive flavor eased after being uncorked for a couple days, but still rather undrinkable. Leathery finish as the winemaker writes on the back of the bottle, but he lied about the rewarding part.

Cortijo III Rioja Tinto 2007

cotrijoiiiI tried this bottle at Border Grill in Santa Monica and loved it—turns out it’s a great deal. This blend of Tempranillo and Grenache rings of tart cherries, but doesn’t wear out your mouth  with puckering. It lets up at the right moment and soothes with soft tannins. Rioja is usually a good bang for your buck and I definitely recommend this one.

Colosi Rosso Sicilia 2005

This wine didn’t do a whole lot for me. It was quite dry throughout and tasted harsh and chemically.  Usually I like dry reds, but this finish came on too hard and fast; it wrung the red fruit flavors out of my tongue. The wine really just lacked charisma. I would expect to see this featured by the glass at Macaroni Grill or Olive Garden. It is not the caliber of wine I want to fill this blog with–or drink for that matter.

La Playa Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2004

This Chilean wine was huge with prominent cherry and tobacco flavors. For a $7 wine, this is a steal. If there is a BevMo near you, go buy a bottle. Then stop by the supermarket, grab the biggest steak they will sell you, and then have the time of your life. Just go do it.

Brancott Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2006

This Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is something different. It definitely tops out the Nobilo in this price range. A wine-loving friend wrote had this praise:
The win’s tagline ought to be: “You won’t fall asleep drinking this wine”. This Sauvignon Blanc is powerful. The crisp, slightly spicey taste contrasts perfectly with a humid summer night. It is a bit spicy, almost peppery, for a Sauvignon Blanc and not at all grassy. I particularly like the clean citrus flavor. I think it’s a wine best drunk in the late afternoon, outside on the porch.

Steven Bannus Zinfandel Sonoma County Reserve 2005

While at work today, I wrote an intensely negative review of  this wine. At one point I likened its oomph to a  ‘declawed, pregnant cat on a porch swing idly swatting at a fly on a lazy Sunday afternoon’  (thank NPH for that imagery). For two days I sought out something I liked in the wine, but really came up short. It was way too jammy and flabby for me and it completely lacked the spicy kick I was looking for in a Zinfandel.

When I got home this evening, I saw that half of a glass remained in the bottle. Never being one to waste wine, I took a swill straight from the bottle–I am the epitome of class by the way. The wine absolutely exploded in my mouth. The spiciness and strong character was suddenly present. The wine was still jammy, but it had new depth and a great dry finish.

As i made dinner I debated with myself the cause of this sea change of flavors. Although could have been the two day old bottle, I’m pretty sure that the incredibly garlicky chicken I ate for those two night had a dominant effect. I’ve always had an odd relationship with garlic, but I think this particular dish kicked my taste buds in the balls. In fact, I’m still slightly feeling the effects of that garlic. Revising my early score of 55 I would now give this wine a solid 77.  Also, I am never eating Trader Joe’s Chicken Serenada again.

Snoqualmie Winemaker’s Select Riesling 2007

This decadent Riesling from Washington could very well be distilled from peach cobbler. It’s bursting with bushels of lush peaches, pears and apricots. Despite being quite sweet, I thought that the wine was nicely balanced with a zip of acidity. It ends with a surprisingly spicy finish and lasts for ages. In all ways you get a big bang for your buck. This is a perfect August evening wine.
